SC moves to reduce backlog of cases: CJ

Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain on Friday said huge backlog of pending cases and long delay in its disposal are the main barrier in ensuring access to justice.

The Supreme Court is working hard to solve the problems, he said while addressing as chief guest at a inauguration of two day workshop on “Case Management: Towards a Better Justice System” at Savar.

The Supreme Court and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) jointly organized the workshop at BRAC-CDM in Savar where 21 judges from different district courts and some lawyers participate.

The chief justice said the separation of judiciary will not be sustainable if a separate judicial secretariat is not formed under the Supreme Court.
Judicial secretariat has to be formed in order to control and develop the judicial administration and case management system, he said.
Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain of Appellate Division, Justice Mohammad Anwarul Haque, Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice Farah Mahbub of High Court Division, Advocate Abdul Baset Majumder, Vice Chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council, and its member Advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayun, Advocate Shahdeen Malik, Assistant Country Director of UNDP in Bangladesh Won Young Hong, and US Attorney Scott Ciment addressed the inaugural function.
