Jessore KUK activities being hampered due to fund shortage

Behavioral correction and mental boom of the children at Kishore Unnayan Kendra at Pulerhat in Jessore are being hampered severely though it has been founded to do so.

The children don't get desired medical facilities, sufficient food and legal support from the kendra (juvenile development centre) which is meant for children's mental correction and physical growth.

Most of the children are suffering from various health problems, including skin diseases, but are not getting medicinal treatment; their clothes are seen dirty; there is no doctor or assistant to attend them at the centre; the post of the doctor is laying vacant for a long.

HC asks govt to remove structures from Cox’s Bazar sea beach

The High Court on Monday ordered the government to remove all temporary and permanent structures from Cox's Bazar sea beach.

Passing the interim order upon a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) writ petition, a High Court division bench, headed by Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury asked the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and the
Superintendent of Police (SP) of Cox’s Bazar to submit a follow-up report within seven days.

Farida Haque, wife of Supreme Court's veteran lawyer barrister Rafiqul Haque, has passed away. She was 69.

Farida Haque breathed her last around 4:30am on Friday at the city's BIRDEM Hospital, family sources said.

The High Court on Thursday asked Establishment
Secretary Iqbal Mahmud to appear in person before it on January 18,
the latest to face the tune of contempt of court.

Passing the order upon a contempt-of-court petition, an HC division
bench, headed by Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury, also issued a rule
upon Iqbal Mahmud to explain why contempt proceedings should not be
drawn against him, for deliberately flouting its directive.

The High Court has asked establishment secretary Iqbal Mahmud to explain why contempt proceedings should not be brought against him.

The court also asked him on Thursday to appear before it on Jan 18 with the explanation for not obeying its order to provide job to a freedom-fighter's son, Mohammad Riaz Uddin.

TIB submits survet inf to SC

ICT ask to submit report on Sayeedi by Feb 15

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has refused bail to major war crimes suspect and top Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee.

The tribunal on Wednesday also ordered the police authorities to submit the investigation report on allegations against Jamaat's executive council member Sayedee by Feb 15 and produce him before the court on Feb 16.

BNP standing committee member Salauddin Quader Chowdhury is likely to be produced before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) tomorrow (December 30).

Earlier on December 19, the ICT issued a 'production warrant' directing the authorities to produce SQ Chowdhury before it tomorrow.

US Senator-elect urges PM: Make ICT Act compatible with rule of law

A US Senator-elect has urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to bring necessary changes to the International Crimes Tribunal act in order to prosecute war criminals for crimes committed during the war of liberation in 1971.

"Many in the international justice movement commend the country's precedent setting efforts to create a war crimes tribunal, but wish to remove the strong suspension that the Tribunal is being used as a tool for political revenge because of its denial of fair trial standards to the accused. I encourage your government to make necessary changes to the Act in order to comply with international standards as ratified in the Rome statute of the Internal Criminal Court," US Senator-elect John Boozman made the call in a letter sent to the Prime Minister recently.

HC asks govt to enforce house rent law properly

The High Court (HC) yesterday (May 18, 2010 ) issued a rule asking the government to explain within four weeks why it should not be directed to enforce properly the law concerning house rent to prevent house owners in the capital from arbitrarily raising rent and taking advance from tenants.

The court came up with the rule after hearing a writ petition seeking directives for strict enforcement of the House Rent Control Act 1991.
