SC bar wants more power for HC judges

Leaders of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) yesterday (December 13) decided to adopt a hard line including boycotting the chief justice's court, if he does not empower more High Court judges to hear and dispose of bail petitions.

Only two HC benches are empowered to hear and dispose of bail petitions, they said at a general meeting held at South Hall of SCBA with its president Khandker Mahbub Hossain in the chair.

The SCBA leaders urged the CJ to give jurisdiction of granting bails to all HC judges, who are empowered to hear and dispose of the criminal motions (petitions on which any rule is yet to be issued).
The Bar Association adopted a resolution that the CJ should be requested: to reconstitute the benches with senior and competent judges; consider financial conditions of lawyers; and justice to litigants.

The association also demanded that the government make specific rules concerning appointment of SC judges.

BNP leader Rafiqul Islam Mian, BNP lawmaker Mahbubuddin Khokon, SCBA Secretary Bodruddoza Badal, its former secretary Zainul Abedin, its assistant secretary AZM Morshed Al Mamun Liton, and ruling Awami League leader Momtaj Uddin Ahmed Mehdi, among others, spoke at the meetingHere details
