UNB, Dhaka, Dec 12
The High Court on Sunday stayed the Chandpur Pourasava (municipality) election activities until the Election Commission prepares a proper, updated and accurate electoral roll.
On December 2, the Election Commission announced the election schedule for Chandpur Pourasava fixing January 18 next year as the polling date.
Passing the interim stay order for two months upon a writ petition, an HC division bench, headed by Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury, also issued rule upon the Election Commission to explain why the
impugned election schedule announced without publishing a proper, updated and accurate electoral roll should not be declared illegal.
Manjurul Islam, a mayoral candidate for Chandpur Pourasava, filed the writ petition challenging the validity of the election schedule, as the Election Commission did not publish a proper, updated and
accurate electoral roll before announcing the election schedule.
Barrister Mahbub Shafique and advocate KM Hafizul Alam appeared for the writ petitioner.
