DOUBLE MURDER; 3 lawyers held for bail forgery

Three lawyers of the accused in the sensational Gulshan double murder case were detained for bail forgery on June 11.

Faruk Ahmed, 42, Mohammad Moniruzzaman, 41, and Monir Hossain were arrested from the city's Shahbagh and Pallabi areas early on Saturday morning, Dhaka metropolitan police Detective Branch deputy commissioner Monirul Islam told a press conference.


They used fake documents, seals and stamps to secure bail of the accused, he said.

According to Faruk, they took Tk 1.4 million to make the false documents to secure bail orders of Mohammad Rubel and Mithun Chanda, who went into hiding after managing bails from the High Court on fake documents on Jan 23.

They managed to make courts issue bails in 11 cases, he admitted.

They were sentenced to death while Altaf Hossain Altu to life imprisonment by a Speedy Trial Tribunal on June 6 for killing Bangladesh Nursery Owners' Association secretary general Sadequr Rahman, 58, and his wife Romana Nargis, 50.

Rubel and Chanda had fired on the couple after entering their house on Mar 24 last year, as the deceased had refused to marry their daughter Nilufar Yasmin, a Grade X student, off to Rubel.

Sadequr's relative Abul Hossain filed a case with the Gulshan Police Station the same day. Police arrested Rubel and Chanda from Gabkhan village of Jhalakati Sadar upazila after four days, while Altu was arrested later.
