The High Court on June 13 issued an order to preserve Jugi Tila in Ambarkhana in Sylhet and put a check on hill cutting there.
A bench of justices A H M Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Gobinda Chandra Tagore passed the order on Monday upon a writ petition by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA).
Advocate Iqbal Kabir Liton stood for BELA while barrister A B M Altaf Hossain argued for the state.
Department of Environment in 2009 had permitted the 'so-called owner' to supervise the hill, Liton told journalists.
But after getting the permission, he started indiscriminate cutting of the hill and did not stop even after the permission was withdrawn following a case filed by BELA, he added.
BELA had filed a writ petition over the issue the same year.
