A Dhaka court yesterday asked the jail authorities to appear before it on January 24 to explain why first class division was provided to former Motijheel police chief, an accused in Kamrul Islam Momin killing case.

Press Club Election: HC order challenged

HC issues suo moto on ship scrapping

The High Court on Wednesday issued a suo moto rule directing the government to stop scrapping of ships in the country until further order following Tuesday's explosion at a ship-breaking yard in Chittagong that killed four people.


An HC division bench ordered the authorities concerned to relocate the exploded ship to a secured place and also issued a contempt of court rule against the owner of the shipyard.

HC twin-rule against Fire Service DG

The High Court on Monday issued a twin-rule asking the Home Secretary to explain why a directive should not be given for legal steps to be taken against the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defense DG Brig Gen ANM Shahidullah, to investigate alleged corruption in procurement of various modern equipment for the directorate.

The High Court also asked the Establishment Secretary to explain why direction should not be given to rescind its order reappointing Brig Gen Shahidullah for another two years on contract basis.

The rules were made returnable in three weeks, said the court order.

Kamrangirchar OC kept standing before court for 7 hrs

The High Court yesterday kept Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kamrangirchar police station standing in the courtroom for about five hours for his 'distorted' comment regarding amputation of a child and negligence to court's order.

Earlier on Sunday, the HC directed the OC, Shafiqul Islam Shikdar, to physically appear before it yesterday (Monday).

Keep SQ Chy detained, directs ICT

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Monday directed the authorities to keep BNP standing committee member Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, MP in custody till April 19, 2011.

Stop promoting illegal housing projects: HC

The High Court on Monday ordered the government to stop the publicity and advertisement of unauthorised housing projects.

A bench of justices A H M Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Sheikh Mohammad Zakir Hossain on Monday asked the government to remove immediately all the installed billboards of such projects and stop their further promotions.

The order came following a petition filed by Bangladesh Environment Lawyers Association (BELA).

During the hearing, Iqbal Kabir argued for the petitioner while deputy attorney general Barrister A B M Altaf Hossain stood for the state.

Writ filed to stop BSF killings at border

A Writ petition was filed on Monday with the High Court seeking its direction upon the government to take effective measures to stop killings of Bangladeshi citizens in the Bangladesh-India border by the Indian force.

A Supreme Court lawyer, Advocate Tazul Islam, filed the petition after a Bangladeshi girl, Felani, was shot to death by BSF and hanged with ware-fancy at Fulbari border while she was crossing the border on January 7.

In the petition, the HC's direction was also sought upon the government to give proper compensation to the family of Felani.
