No bar on Sandwip municipality polls

The Appellate Division on Monday stayed the High Court order that postponed elections in Sandwip municipality, clearing the way for the polls.

Chamber judge Surendra Kumar Sinha stayed the High Court order on Monday following an appeal by the Election Commission, deputy attorney general Mostafa Jaman Islam told bdnews24.com.


Mostafa Jaman and additional attorney general M K Rahman stood for the plaintiff while A M Aminuddin for the defendant.

The polls in Sandwip municipality were scheduled for Tuesday (Jan 18).

The High Court postponed the polls in the municipality on Jan 10 upon a writ petition filed by Mohammad Atiqullah, a voter of the municipality.

Polls in 63 municipalities of Chittagong and Sylhet divisions will be held on Tuesday.Dhaka, Jan 17 (bdnews24.com)
