'Amended law to gear up judiciary'

The government has planned to amend the criminal and civil procedure to infuse dynamism into the judiciary, the law minister has said.

"Trial of any case has to be finished within the shortest possible time to remove the harassment of justice seekers and that will be possible once the criminal and civil procedure is amended," Shafique Ahmed said on Saturday.

Committee is working to find corrupt in Judiciary: CJ

Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque on Saturday said the committee, formed to investigate into the TIB household survey report, is working to find out the corrupt persons in the judiciary.

The TIB report, published recently, showed the judiciary as top corrupt sector in the country. After publishing the report, the Supreme Court asked TIB to give the report's documents. TIB top officials did so, met with the Judges and clarified different points of the report.

HC declares illegal corporal punishment to school students

The High Court on Thursday declared illegal as well as unconstitutional all kinds of corporal punishment to the students in schools and madrasas enforced by teachers.

Delivering the judgment on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), the
High Court also asked the government to formulate an effective policy
guideline to bring to an end of all kinds of corporal punishment in
classrooms to ensure a more conducive atmosphere for the students, as
the existing procedure against the perpetrators lacks propriety.

Taher case: HC summons Shawkat, Tribunal judge says he wanted to resign

Mohammad Abdul Ali, one of the judges of the Military Tribunal that tried Col (Retd) Abu Taher and others in 1976, yesterday gave his statement to the High Court bench, saying that he had become a judge as per directive of then Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka AMM Shawkat Ali.

The HC directed AMM Shawkat Ali, former adviser of the last caretaker government, to appear before it on January 18 regarding the Tribunal's trial that sentenced Taher to death in 1976.

Two top officials of the Transparency International of Bangladesh (TIB) yesterday met the Chief Justice and other judges of the committee, made to evaluate recent TIB report, at the judges' lounge of the SC.

3 more judges submit wealth reports to CJ

Three more Supreme Court judges have submitted their wealth statements to the Chief Justice.

The High Court on Wednesday asked the Cabinet Secretary to submit the names and whereabouts of the army men who were pivotal in making decisions from behind to run the state between November 1975 and August 1976.

The court also asked the Establishment and Defense secretaries to submit the names and whereabouts of the members of the Special Martial Law Tribunal which awarded death sentence to Lt Col (retd) MA Taher, Bir Uttam.

Barrister Toby Cadman on January 12 said the principles of the international law and 'due process' must be followed in holding trail of the international crimes in a free and fair manner.

Otherwise, the whole process of such a trial was defected, Toby Cadman, a former prosecutor of Bosnia and Herzegovina, said, "Justice must not only be done: it must be seen to be done."

SC lawyer Iftekha Ahmed for written apology

The High Court on November directed Supreme Court lawyer Iftekha Ahmed for apologising to it in black and while for his false arguments on behalf of Korban Ali, the main accused in a child amputation case.

A bench of the HC comprising Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain passed the order.

HC orders reappointment of 28 SIs

The High Court has instructed government to reappoint 28 sub inspectors of police who were forced to retire during the tenure of four-party alliance government.

On Monday, a bench of Justice Mohammad Momtazuddin and Justice Govinda Chandra Tagore gave the order following three separate writ petitions as regards the retirements.

Youth correction centre in dismay

Arman is only 12. His bad luck compelled him to land in custody at a juvenile development centre in Jessore over a theft charge at this age.

The shocking incident happened when Arman as a matter of venture left Chittagong for Dhaka by train along with some of his friends and then again they departed for Patuakhali by launch. When they reached Patuakhali, Arman was, somehow, arrested by police over a theft incident.

Police sent him to custody in a correction centre for children named 'Kishore Unnayan Kendra (Juvenile Development Centre)' at Pulerhat in Jessore. The very centre is now the address of Arman for the last few months.

Jessore KUK activities being hampered due to fund shortage

Behavioral correction and mental boom of the children at Kishore Unnayan Kendra at Pulerhat in Jessore are being hampered severely though it has been founded to do so.

The children don't get desired medical facilities, sufficient food and legal support from the kendra (juvenile development centre) which is meant for children's mental correction and physical growth.

Most of the children are suffering from various health problems, including skin diseases, but are not getting medicinal treatment; their clothes are seen dirty; there is no doctor or assistant to attend them at the centre; the post of the doctor is laying vacant for a long.
