The election to Chandpur Pourasava stands on tenterhooks as the Supreme Court on Monday vacated its stay on the operation of the High Court order that had halted the election process.
The Election Commission set January 27 as polling date.
Vacating its stay order, the three-judge Appellate Bench, asked the contesting parties to get the rule resolved over the pre-election disputes pending with the High Court by January 31.
On December 12 last year, the High Court upon a writ petition stayed the process of holding election to the Chandpur municipality.
Manjurul Islam, a voter of the municipality, filed the writ petition challenging the validity of the election schedule and the electoral roll.
Emerging from the court, Barrister M Amir-Ul Islam, Manjurul’s lawyer, told reporters that the election to the Chandpur pourasava would not be held until disposal of the HC rule. --Dhaka, Jan 10 (UNB)
