Establishment Secretary Iqbal Mahmud faces contempt of court tune

The High Court on Thursday asked Establishment
Secretary Iqbal Mahmud to appear in person before it on January 18,
the latest to face the tune of contempt of court.

Passing the order upon a contempt-of-court petition, an HC division
bench, headed by Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury, also issued a rule
upon Iqbal Mahmud to explain why contempt proceedings should not be
drawn against him, for deliberately flouting its directive.

M Reaz Uddin, son of a martyred freedom fighter, filed the contempt
petition as he did not get the appointment of the vacant post of
Health Assistant for Kamolnagar upazila in Laxmipur district, despite
a High Court directive.

On June 10 last year, the High Court, while resolving a writ petition
directed the respondents, including the Establishment Secretary, to
consider the appointment of the petitioner in the reserve quota of
30% for the freedom fighters and theirs wards within 30 days from the
date of receipt of the judgment.

Reaz Uddin had filed the writ petition challenging the validity of
the impugned results published on April 13, last year, in which his
name did not appear, though he qualified for viva voce test on merit,
through a written examination for the vacant post of Health Assistant
that is reserved for the wards of freedom fighters in Kamolnagar
upazila.

Advocate Gazi Mushtaque Ahmed, assisted by barrister Mohi Uddin
Shamim, appeared for the petitioner.
