AL lawyers protest CJ role

The pro-Awami League lawyers yesterday (January 23) expressed angry over the role of Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque for introducing new High Court Division management system in disposing of cases.

At a meeting of Awami Ainjibi Samannay Parishad at the auditorium of Bangladesh Bar Council, the lawyers criticised  the role of the CJ in introducing sector-wise Writ bench of the HC Division and selecting particular petitions at his residence and putting those in the cause list for hearing.

They also expressed their angry over direction of the Chief Justice in granting bail.

They termed the CJ role as out of his jurisdiction, adding that "the justice seekers were facing sufferings for the new court management system, introduced for the first time in the apex court.

Law Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, former Law Minister Advocate Abdul Matin Khasru MP, AL presidium member Yousuf Hossain Humayun, former president of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) AFM Mesbah Uddin, its former secretary SM Rezaul Karim, among others, addressed the meeting, which was presided over by senior Supreme Court lawyer and convener of the parishad Barrister Amir-ul Islam.

Following demands of the lawyers, the law minister and the attorney general assured them to resolve the problem through discussing with the Chief Justice over the matter.

However, the pro-BNP lawyers and leaders of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) staged a sit-in program in front of the Chief Justice protesting the new court management system on January 18.

SCBA gave the CJ a seven-day ultimatum to the CJ to change the reconstituted system. Otherwise, it warned to launch tough movement.

Though the pro-AL lawyers didn't take part in the demonstration, they reportedly had full support on the demand of the lawyers.
