SCBA chief slates CJ

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president has accused chief justice A B M Khairul Haque of 'destroying' the judiciary by carrying out activities 'beyond his jurisdiction'.

SCBA president Khandker Mahbub Hossain made the comment at a press conference in its meeting room on Sunday.

"The chief justice is making lists and distributing cases. This is unprecedented. It didn't happen in the last 40 years. Constitutionally, this is beyond his jurisdiction," said Mahbub Hossain.

Mahbub said the chief justice's duty was to restructure the benches, not assigning cases.

"This is not only frustrating for those who are seeking justice, but also infuriating the lawyers. There are many judges who leave the court after 12 noon, as they do not have any cases to dispose of," he added.

"One man's eccentricity is destroying the entire judiciary."

Alleging political recruitment of judges, Hossain said, "This has been going on since the incumbent government assumed office."

Mahbub called on the judges to exercise their constitutional freedom.

SCBA secretary Mohammad Badruddoza and other pro-BNP lawyers were present at the press conference.
